Chocolate covered memories
I know that her dad did not approve of her nickname. Susan Carol was her proper name, but friends called her Sue — Dr. Gray now to me and her many patients. I came from north Mississippi and she, from Teaneck, N.J. We met in an airless classroom in the ancient Whitthorne Middle School building. Our taskmaster Marjorie Haynes, homeroom teacher, favored a militant style of dispensing proper speech and diagramming techniques. Fear through intimidation was the rule of the day. It worked and we bonded. |
